It was 1983, I'd gotten bored with life in CT and decided to take a friend
of mine from CompuServe up on her offer of a place to stay if I ever got to
Texas. Once I got there I found the girl and her family were damn spooky,
stories of MIB's, alien visitors, ghosts and demons, were everywhere.
This is the story of one of those encounters, which has been reoccurring
for the past 16 years now with no real signs of letting up.
One night we were too restless to sleep, something kept us on edge, the whole
apartment felt oppressive and neither of us were comfortable there, so we
decided to go for a walk to get away from the vibes that were bugging us.
We hit the local 7-11 played a few video games, had a slurpee and decided
to head back home. Walking along a fairly dark road I kept getting the
feeling that something bad was about to happen, Barb (not her real name)
was noticeably agitated and kept trying to hurry us along. I happened
to glance back the way we'd come and I saw in the shadows along a low
picket fence what looked like a dog, it had to have been four feet at
the shoulders and at least seven long, it's eyes the size of saucers
were blood red and it didn't seem to have fur, it was jet black and
didn't make a sound. Barb turned and saw it a second after I did and
grabbed my hand as we started running for the apartment, but the dog cut
us off, it/he kept getting between us and the way we needed to go to
get to safety, it never got too close, but it kept itself in our way,
so Barb said "let's go to my aunt's house, maybe she'll be awake!".
So we turned and took off in the other direction away from the dog and
the apartment. We got to her aunt's house, and before we could even
knock the door was opened and her aunt dragged us inside and sat us
down on the couch.

On the coffee table there were waiting for us three still steaming cups of
tea, as if she knew we were coming. Outside we heard the sounds of something
moving around the bushes, and her aunt excused herself and walked into her
bedroom and said 'something' (what I cannot recall ) I looked in after her
and saw the dog peering in the window at her, she came back, slammed the
door to her bedroom and had a long talk with us about messing with powers
and things we didn't understand, and she kept reminding Barb about things
that had happened 'before'. A couple hours later the sun was coming up the
bad vibe was gone and we walked home without incident.

Things happened, as things are wont to do, and I ended up having to leave
Texas and returned to CT.

(another run in with the dog)

About a year later I landed a job working for a security company guarding
an abandoned hospital complex (yes, Laurel heights). One night while working
second shift to cover for a guard that'd quit I'd stayed into the next shift
to talk to my replacement, I got all the way home and realized I'd left my j
acket there, I had the next three days off and was going camping that weekend
so I headed back to get it. After picking up the jacket and heading for home
I was coming down a large hill and just happened to glance back in the
rearview mirror only to see the dog come leaping up out of a stream bed and
come racing after my car. This thing kept up with me at over 50 mph for
more than a mile when it finally turned off and headed into the woods.

(and yet another)

One night after going to the midnight showing of Rocky Horror I had dropped
my friend S. off at his house out in the boonies, the whole night had been
increasingly weird, bad vibes, people who were friends fighting etc. As I
dropped S. off I had the urge/feeling to get the hell out of there as quick
as I could so I broke several speed limits and got myself home, only to find
my roommate awake and quite aggravated, telling me S. had called at least
three times wanting to know if I'd gotten home or if Greg had heard from me,
I called S. back and he told me that as I was leaving the driveway (and
accelerating heavily) he saw 'something'That looked like a huge black animal
leap 50 feet or more from his roof to his neighbors garage and then another
30 feet to the road just behind my car. I'd never told him anything about
seeing this thing ever before hand.

These are for right now, the most memorable of the encounters with this thing,
whatever it is, most of the few other times I've only felt him off coming close,
but never close enough to see him, the most recent was just a month or so ago
when he came quite close to my home, close enough to get all the dogs in the
neighborhood howling, and upsetting my cat and two birds. It's been 16 years
since the first time I've seen him, I've tried to challenge him, but he won't
come to me, I've tried to find out what it is but no one I have spoken to about
it seems to have any idea.

Maybe some day.
